But he added: "If you don't perform individually and you don't play as a team then you don't win whatever formation you are playing."

There was also support for teenage striker Wayne Rooney, whose trademark aggression boiled over into a yellow card that will rule him out of the Austria game.

FIERY SIDE

"He has got that fiery side him in that most great players have got," Beckham said.

"But sometimes in games it just goes that little bit over the edge. Of course, Wayne and all of us are disappointed. There are no fingers being pointed at anyone.

"If you take that out of Wayne, you don't have the player we have got... you take half of that aggression and half of that passion for the game out."

Rooney's absence will be a setback against Austria, but Eriksson believes England will still turn their fortunes around.

"It's been a bad start to the season, I agree with that," the Swede told reporters.

But he added: "Some of our important players will be fitter in October than they are today and that's important for us. It's a must for us."

Pointing to his throat, the Swede said: "We all have the knives here if we want to play at the World Cup. I'm sure we will respond in a very positive way.

"I could not even dream of not qualifying for the World Cup," he said. "We have to win the next two games but the question 'if', that's not to respond to today. We're going to win and that's it."
