LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- Liverpool and Chelsea drew 0-0 in a spirited Champions League Group G match filled with fierce tackling at Anfield on Wednesday.

It was a rematch of last season's semifinalists, where Liverpool upset Chelsea 1-0 to advance to the final and win its fifth European title.

Both sides were strong in defense and midfield with the ball going from end to end throughout. Chelsea's best chance in the first half came when winger Arjen Robben dribbled down the right with Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Manuel Reina palming his shot over the crossbar.

Midfielder Frank Lampard's free kick in the eighth minute was also turned around the post by Reina. Xabi Alonso earning a yellow card for holding back midfielder Michael Essien to give away the free kick.
