Beijing 2008: New environmental logo unveiled
(BOCOG)
Updated: 2005-10-04 15:44

The Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 (BOCOG) has unveiled its new environmental logo. The symbol, which was created using a calligraphic art form, is composed of human and tree-like shapes.

Harmony and Unity

The logo consists of the crown of a tree and the shape of a human being, which are used to create the form of a large tree reaching the sky. The image represents harmony and unity between human beings and nature. Just like swinging coloured strips that encircle and cross each other, the green lines form a luxuriant crown of a tree and recall flowers in full bloom, embodying the sustainable development of nature.

Public Participation

Speaking during the unveiling of the new logo, BOCOG Executive Vice-President and Vice-Mayor of the Beijing Municipality Liu Jingmin made the point that the environmental goals of BOCOG needed not only the support of the government and the work of BOCOG, but that they also depended on the participation of the public. He spoke about how the new symbol was an important step in BOCOG’s educational work to encourage more citizens to participate in “green” activities, support the “green” Olympic Games and lead “green” lives.

BEIJING 2008

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 August 2008 until 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
