A Taliban commander and 2 senior Afghan officials confirmed Thursday that Italian forces paid protection money to prevent attacks on their troops, the Times reported. The Taliban commander said a deal was struck last year so that Italian forces in the Salobi area were not attacked by local insurgents. It previously reported Italian authorities had paid the bribes, which was followed by furious denials in Rome. |
