NPC: 70 to vie for delegation membership

Rita Fan, a standing committee member of the 11th NPC and who won the most support for the last election of NPC Hong Kong delegation, said she would not fancy being the "voting queen" again and was looking no further ahead than to acquire nomination as a standing committee member. Recently, Fan ran into controversy by criticizing the Leung Chun-ying administration, but she could not evaluate the negative effect of that criticism on her campaign.
"I am a person who always speaks my mind," she said. "If you think what I said is right then it will be all right. But if people disagree with what I said and choose not to vote for me, I respect their rights."
Referring to social conflicts mentioned by Li Jianguo, incumbent NPC deputy and Executive Councillor Cheng Yiu-tong said the conflicts arose from different sources, including employer-employee conflicts and partisan political conflicts. Li's remarks reflected his deep understanding of the Hong Kong situation, Cheng observed, adding that the SAR government should launch measures to improve the community's standard of living as soon as possible.
Tam Yiu-chung, chairman of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, said it is natural that there are various conflicts in Hong Kong. He added, however, it is most important that Hong Kong stay united to minimize the conflicts and make progress.
