Opposition's bid doomed

On Wednesday, the Legislative Council debated the HKSAR's first motion calling for the impeachment of the Chief Executive (CE). As widely expected, the motion was defeated. Together with one previous rejected non-confidence vote and one special inquiry against CY Leung, the opposition camp has suffered repeated humiliation and failure. A clear and sound message has been sent - any attempt to mislead public opinion and create disorder in Hong Kong society is doomed to fail, because it is against the fundamental interest of the majority.

What is worrying is the growing trend that a handful of irresponsible opposition politicians are bent on politicizing every single issue to hamper the government's work, tarnish the officials' reputation and mess up Hong Kong. Their ultimate goal is to topple the government and grab power. This explains why the opposition camp has spared no effort in smearing CY Leung and his team again and again although the cost of such action is immeasurable to the whole society.

The CE's first Policy Address is to be delivered in less than a week. Much work needs to be done to tackle an array of issues concerning the lives of millions of local residents, such as housing, poverty alleviation, healthcare, reshaping the local economy and environmental protection. To solve these thorny issues, the CE must be allowed to concentrate on his work to help develop the economy and improve the people's quality of life, instead of being hampered by the opposition's repeated attempts to stop him from carrying out his duties.

We urge those who care for and love Hong Kong to stand up and rally behind the CE and the SAR government. We also hope Leung and his team stay united and maintain their high morale. The best way for the government to thwart the opposition camp's denigrating action is to work harder to better improve the economy and tackle livelihood issues, so as to win the recognition of the majority of Hong Kong people.
