More education subsidies needed
Education groups are calling for more public subsidies and scrutiny over self-financing post-secondary education, in the wake of an enrolment debacle at Lingnan University's two colleges. The President of the Processional Teachers' Union Fung Wai-wah told a Legislative Council panel meeting government subsidies would help schools such as Lingnan to maintain higher levels of education.
On Thursday, an inquiry found the dean of Lingnan University had approved the doubling of the school's intake of associate degree students, beyond the school's capacity and without the authorization of the university board. The government inquiry lambasted Edward Fung for making the decision in flagrant breach of procedures and rules. Fung resigned over the fiasco.
Missed pregnancy earns suspension
A doctor whose failed diagnosis kept a woman remaining in ignorance of her pregnancy until she required an abortion has had his license suspended for two months for professional misconduct.
The Medical Council of Hong Kong took the action after hearing the 46-year-old patient was admitted to Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital in 2009 to be treated for a urinary tract infection. She was treated by Chow Kwan Lung, an in-house physician. Chow misread the patient's laboratory report and told her she was not pregnant. Without knowing she was pregnant, the patient took an x-ray, and medications for treating a cold. A month later, she took an ultrasound, and was found to be three months pregnant and decided to have an abortion.
