Finland has developed a knowledge and innovation-based economy driven in part by globally leading per capita spending on R&D .

At the 2011 World Economic Forum, it was named "the country with the world's best availability of scientists and engineers, and the best education system".

"Finland's economy is associated with high-tech and innovative solutions with many of the larger Finnish companies recognized as global leaders," said Hannu Bergholm, chairman of the Finland-Hong Kong Trade Association.

"Finnish companies have successfully developed their businesses in China. Small to mid-sized Finnish companies are now entering China to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the clean technology, water solutions, healthcare and service sectors." said Bergholm.

"As Chinese companies start establishing operations in Europe, Finland remains an excellent market entry point with its strategic location on the continent."

Close cooperation between research institutions and industry, early adoption of information technology and the country's skilled workforce have enabled Finland to become a model test market for new technologies.

International companies continue to explore business opportunities in Finland and benefit from government support and access to the country's national technology programs.

Located in Northern Europe, it has developed into an international trading hub with a sophisticated road and rail network offering highly competitive operating costs.

"Finland benefits from world-class infrastructure, a strong economy and a reputation for quality products and services," said Kimmo Mki, managing director of the Port of Helsinki.

"The port prides itself on facilitating trade between Finland and the world," Mki said.

The country is continuing to work closer with China.

"The major theme in Finland-China business ties will be sustainable development," says Tuomo Airaksinen, executive vice-president of Invest in Finland.

"Finland has strong competences in the fields of new energy, energy efficiency and clean technologies. Bilateral investments in the fields will complement economic growth in both countries. Finland can offer the scope while China definitely offers the scale."
