Global chipmaker hews close to original ideals

China Daily | Updated: 2014-11-10 09:55

Marvell Technology Group is not the typical Silicon Valley story. Husband and wife, Dr Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai, met while pursuing their academic dreams studying at the University of California in Berkeley and founded their company on their kitchen table in 1995.

Today, Marvell produces over one billion chips a year - making it one of the world's leading fabless semiconductor companies. It has more than 7,000 employees worldwide and 18 international design centers around the globe.

"We have been in business for almost 20 years, but it still feels like yesterday when we started the company," says Weili Dai, president and co-founder of Marvell Technology Group and currently the only female co-founder of a major global semiconductor company. "The difference between when we started and our present position as leaders in our industry is the huge responsibility we have to our customers. We have a sense of pride and commitment in the work we do."

Diversity in its product portfolio has enabled Marvell to supply the world's leading companies engaged in storage solutions, cloud services and infrastructure, consumer solutions, green technology, digital entertainment and mobile and wireless communications with integrated silicon solutions.

Marvell has over 2,000 employees in China.

"We are very proud of our presence in China, and remain highly committed to this market," says Dai, who originally hails from Shanghai. "China is committed to driving technology forward and supporting innovation. The country's remarkable talent pool and fast-developing consumer market provide us with a tremendous opportunity to grow our business."

Customers in China include leading carriers including China Mobile and China Unicom, to leading OEMs and ODMs including ZTE, Yulong Coolpad, Samsung and Lenovo. Recently, ZTE launched a 5-mode 4G LTE mass-market smartphone powered by Marvell Technology Group's award-winning ARMADA Mobile PXA1920 platform.

"The Bay Area and Silicon Valley region attracts the greatest minds from all over the world, and it remains a leading innovation center," Dai concludes. "Within a 50-mile radius there is a complete ecosystem of businesses, universities and venture capital companies funding entrepreneurs. Innovative Chinese companies are flourishing here and I encourage further exchange between the Bay Area and China."
