Opportunities for Strengthening Sino-Japanese Cooperation in Major Fields (No.43, 2019)

Abstract: From November 12 to November 14, 2018, the author attended the 11th Seminar on Sino-Japanese Relations held in Tokyo, and exchanged views with delegates from both China and Japan on issues relating to the situation in Northeast Asia, world trade operation and Sino-Japanese relations. With regard to world trade, the delegates reached consensuses on many issues in terms of the performance of global economy, the negative impact induced by American trade protectionism and the importance of strengthening Sino-Japanese economic cooperation. The keynote speech made by the Chinese delegates noted that the common concern expressed by China and Japan had gone beyond the traditional bilateral relations and touched upon a number of topics on regional and multi-lateral cooperation in various fields, which fully exemplifies the regional and global significance of strengthening cooperation between the two economic powers of China and Japan. In the days to come, China and Japan need to make joint efforts to combat against unilateralism and trade protectionism and advance the economic integration of East Asia. In addition, they need to enforce strategic synergy between the “Belt and Road” Initiative and Japan’s international cooperation, enhance trade investment and the third-party market cooperation and strengthen bilateral cooperation on major issues in relevant fields.
