Abstract: Industrial design is a major driver for high-quality development of the manufacturing industry as well as an important approach to transforming “Made in China” into “Created in China”. Currently, a new round of industrial revolution is gaining momentum and is shifting industrial design toward innovative design. China’s industrial design has developed rapidly and played an increasingly strong role in boosting and contributing to industrial upgrading in recent years. However, the development of China’s industrial design is still checked by improper market environment, which is directly related to China’s late start, backward concepts and unsound supporting institutional systems in industrial design. It is suggested that China’s industrial design grasp the strategic opportunities brought about by the new industrial revolution, and give full play to design innovations in driving the industry. Besides, it is necessary to improve the policy and institutional environment to make it conducive to the innovative development of industrial design, optimize the education and human resources training system, improve the fiscal, taxation and financial supporting system, promote the intellectual property rights protection and industrial regulation development and fully deepen international exchanges and cooperation in a bid to push ahead with the high-quality development of manufacturing industry through design innovations.
