Abstract: The construction drive of beautiful villages in various localities has improved the attractiveness, creativity and cohesiveness of rural areas by improving the livable environment, increasing employment opportunities for more income, and encouraging spontaneous participation. The drive has laid a solid foundation for the improvement of people’s livelihood and the advance of social governance in rural areas. Promoting the construction of beautiful villages still faces some challenges arising from relevant institutional mechanism, capabilities and means pertinent to social governance in rural areas. How to effectively coordinate the relationship between administrative governance and villagers’ self-governance, effectively ensure the villagers’ principal position and cope with the Internet technological change are all major issues for strengthening social governance in rural areas and building beautiful villages. In the future, it is necessary to further coordinate national support and villagers’ self-governance to improve the governance mechanism for the construction of beautiful villages; mobilize the enthusiasm of villagers to enhance the endogenous driving force for the development of beautiful villages; and make full use of Internet technology to raise the level of smart governance of beautiful villages.
