Overview of China's education system

Updated: 2013-08-23

The education system in China is sometimes referred to as "four educations" and "seven levels". The "four educations" concerns pre-school education, primary education, secondary education and higher education. The "seven levels" refers to kindergarten, primary school, junior high school, senior high school, higher college education, undergraduate education and postgraduate education. China has a compulsory education system, with children from 6 to 7 entering primary school and beginning nine years of compulsory education.

Regulations concerning foreign nationals who wish to send their children to primary and secondary schools in Beijing:

Foreign students can only apply to schools authorized to accept foreign nationals.

JW202 is a form issued by the school upon acceptance for admission – and it is required as part of the application process for a Chinese student visa (X Visa).

Foreign students residing overseas should apply for an X Visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate - with the JW202 form and also a letter of acceptance from the school.

Within 30 days after arrival in China, the student should apply - again presenting the JW202 form and the admission letter - for a residence permit at the Division of the Entry-Exit Administration of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

If the student's parents reside permanently in Beijing, proof of permanent residency is required. Otherwise, a foreign national residing in China or a Chinese national with permanent residence in Beijing can be appointed as a guardian, who is required to write a certified statement.

Students over the age of 16 should also present a valid health certificate.
