The city of Jiayuguan, in Gansu province began construction work on a Silk Road Cultural Exposition Park, on Aug 25 , to highlight the ancient trade route that stretched from Gansu to Central and West Asia, along with its folk culture, handcrafts, and songs and dances from the Dunhuang region.

The park, which is expected to open in May 2017, will use various technology, for example laser multimedia and three-dimensional effects, to display Chinese myths and folk tales, such as Butterfly Lovers, in the park.

The park covers more than 600,000 square meters and the organizers are expecting to get more than 3-million tourists annually, bringing in around 600-million yuan ($93.6 million), and to provide jobs for 8,000 people.

Shenzhen Huaqiang Holdings, an investment company with HQ in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, is putting approximately 3.1 billion yuan into the park. And the head of the Gansu publicity dept, Lian Ji, says that another investor is the Gansu Radio and Television Network Co.

Lian went on to say that Shenzhen Huaqiang will benefit from tourism growth in Gansu and that the park and its culture and tourism business will help the industries in Jiayuguan city.
