Gansu imports breeding sheep from Australia

Agricultural trade between Gansu and Australia is set to increase with the purchase of 1,474 Australian breeding sheep.

It’s the first time that Gansu province has imported large quantities of livestock, according to the Gansu local authorities.

After a 30 hours flight, the sheep arrived at Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport on Nov 1. According to regulations, the sheep will be quarantined for 45 days and undergo a series of medical checks.

“The imported sheep will include seven species such as the Dorper sheep and Suffolk sheep,” said a staff member from the Gansu Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

The imported breeding sheep are expected to improve the quality of mutton from Gansu and adjust the structure of the province’s animal husbandry.

Lying between the Tibetan and Loess plateaus, Gansu is cold in winter. Due to its low temperature, local residents would prefer to eat mutton and beef especially in winter. Official statistics show that, Gansu’s per capita mutton consumption in last year is 7.45 kilogram, higher than other places in China.
