The Golden Slam

In 1984, Steffi Graf, then 15 years old, won the Olympic tennis demonstration tournament despite being its youngest entrant.

By 1987 she was ranked number one in the world. In 1988, Graf won the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and, less than a week before the Olympics, the U.S. Open., to become only the fifth player in history to win tennis' Grand Slam.

She arrived at the Seoul Games with a 35-match winning streak. In the Olympic final, she defeated Gabriela Sabatini 6-3, 6-3 to achieve the first "Golden Slam."

Between 17 August 1987 and 10 March 1991, Graf was ranked number one in the world for 186 weeks in a row.

When she retired in 1999, her career win-loss record was 902-115. Her winning percentage, .887, was second in history only to Chris Evert's .900. In 1999 she was awarded the Olympic Order.
