Opposition moves to impeach Lai

Taiwan opposition lawmakers from the Chinese Kuomintang party and Taiwan People's Party announced a plan to impeach the region's leader Lai Ching-te at a press conference held in Taipei on Friday, which analysts said reflects broader societal discontent with Lai's governance.

The impeachment proposal arose from Lai and his administration's refusal to promulgate an amendment to a government revenue allocation law that was recently passed by the island's "legislature".

The opposition parties said in their proposal that the actions undermined the island's legal norms and set a dangerous precedent, and demanded that Lai adhere to the legislative process by publishing the law as required.

Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the KMT, criticized Lai at a meeting on Wednesday for publicly violating the island's legislative system, adding that her party was ready to fight till the end against Lai's moves that are damaging Taiwan.

Chen Guiqing, a research fellow at the Institute of Taiwan Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that Lai appears to be using executive and judicial powers to counterbalance the "legislature", which is controlled by opposition parties, in an attempt to navigate his administration's challenges.

"Lai's actions have provoked significant backlash within Taiwan society," he added.

A website launched on Thursday to gather signatures for the impeachment reportedly collected about 1.5 million signatures by Friday morning, according to local media.

Under Taiwan's legal framework, an impeachment motion against the leader or deputy leader requires the proposal of at least half of the legislative representatives and approval by a two-thirds majority before it can be reviewed by the judicial body. Currently, the combined seats held by the KMT and TPP fall short of the two-thirds requirement, making the success of the impeachment difficult.

Despite the slim chances of success, the impeachment attempt marks a "historic first" in Taiwan's political landscape, Chen said.

"It underscores the deepening mistrust and dissatisfaction among Taiwan representatives and the public towards Lai's administration and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party," he added.
