The Beijing 2008 Organizing Committee (BOCOG) has recently announced a programme to improve accessibility for persons with a disability throughout Beijing.

In the run-up to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, discussion with local authorities on the accessibility of Beijing and the main tourist attractions have been initiated and possible solutions addressed. A total of 16 venues for the 2008 Olympic Games will also be used for the Paralympic Games. Accessibility has been taken into account from the initial construction phase up to the operational phase.

"The building of barrier-free facilities in the city is a key part of the preparation work for the 2008 Paralympic Games," said Ms. Tang Xiaoquan, BOCOG Executive Vice-President and Vice-President of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF).

To ensure accessible transport during the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and beyond, older subway stations and subways are currently being renovated and facilities for persons with a disability, such as ramps, are being set up at all entrances to newly built subway stations.

BOCOG is working closely with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and experts in order to improve accessibility and maximize the legacy for Beijing and China in the long-term.

The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games will be held from 6 to 17 September 2008, with expected 4,000 athletes from 150 countries participating in 20 sports. Eighteen sports will be held in Beijing, with Sailing in Qingdao and Equestrian in Hong Kong.
