Need to fathom sexual orientation

(China Daily) Updated: 2014-12-26 10:00

Chinese society should be more understanding toward gays and lesbians, and stop discriminating against them, says an article in People's Daily. Excerpts:

A famous Chinese sexologist Li Yinhe recently denied an online posting that suspected her to be a lesbian and her "girlfriend" to be a transgender, physically a woman but psychologically a man.

Research shows sexual orientation can be traced to the genes, and homosexuality has existed in human society from prehistoric times. Some countries have passed laws acknowledging the legitimacy of homosexual marriages. Gay and lesbian people's campaigns for equal rights and fair treatment have become a social phenomenon over the past few decades.

Although China's economy has grown at an unbelievable pace, traditional beliefs and conventions still play a big role in shaping public opinion toward gays and lesbians.

Since China has the largest population in the world, it could be home to more homosexual people than any other country. Yet many of them still hide their sexual orientation because of social prejudice.

Existence is rational. That's why Chinese society needs to learn more about sexual orientation of people and abandon antediluvian concepts. And lawmakers should consider passing special laws to protect the rights and interests of gays and lesbians.
