Tongren, known as a “famous city in West China,” is one of six cities in Guizhou province. It is located in the northeastern part of Guizhou province and the middle part of Wuling Mountain, right next to Huihua (the Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture) and Xiushan county in Chongqing, with the Wujiang River connecting the two parts.
The city has two districts, four counties and four autonomous prefectures governed by Tongren, including Bijiang, Wanshan, Jiangkou, Shiqian, Sinan, Dejiang, Yuping, Songtao, Yanhe and Yinjiang.
As the core city of the six cities in the Wuling Mountain area, Tongren takes an important role as a transportation hub in the area. Tongren enjoys a good reputation as the “door of Guizhou province;” a “pure land of Brahma;” and a “city of benevolence, righteousness and wisdom.”
Enjoying abundant rain and sunshine, Tongren has a fantastic climate for agriculture. A great range of agricultural products is produced in Tongren, including rice, corn, sweet potato, potato, soybean, oilseed rape, peanut, flue-cured tobacco, watermelon and sugarcane. In the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), rice produced in Huashixiang was known for its fragrant and refreshing taste. It was specially supplied for imperial catering.
