Former Japanese Pavilion

Located at 228 Nanjing Road, Heping District, Tianjin, the former Japanese Pavilion is the heritage site under city protection and the special protection historic architecture in Tianjin. It is an office building now.

Constructed in 1941, the pavilion, also known as Yanwu Guan, has a floor area of 2200 square meters. The pavilion, established by the Tianjin branch of the Japan Judo Moral Association, was a place for Japanese soldiers and Japanese employees working in China to practice martial arts. The first floor of the building has some apartment-style rooms and the second floor serves as a martial arts practice hall where fencing, Judo and boxing facilities can be found.

This building is a Japanese-style two-storied brick-wood structure with sloping roof covered with tiles. The exterior walls on the first floor are decorated with glazed bricks and the walls on the second floor are plastered brick walls. The building is symmetrical, elegant and spacious. Some components of the building's roof were damaged and lost due to the wear and tear of time and during the Tangshan earthquake.

In 2008, the building was renovated thanks to the efforts made to improve the city's environment in preparation for the Olympic Games. Large numbers of roof components were replaced and installed to restore the building to its former state.
