More wealthy people moving

A report said an increasing number of wealthy people and elites in China are emigrating because of the deterioration of the natural environment.

The report, released by the Center for China and Globalization in late January, said the phenomenon started in mega-cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Many wealthy people or elites sold their businesses and moved to other cities or countries with smaller populations and better air quality.

Infant swallows gold

A newborn baby narrowly escaped choking to death from swallowing a gold earring, Guangzhou Daily reported on Saturday.

The baby's grandmother believed that her newborn grandson lacked gold in his five elements (a Chinese traditional belief that everything in the world should be made up of five elements in order to be good or healthy, the five phases being: gold, wood, water, fire and earth), so she put her gold earring into the infant's mouth in order to "increase the gold element" in the baby's life.

However, the baby swallowed the earring and had difficulty breathing. Luckily, he was rushed to hospital in time and was saved.
