Russian parliamentary elections results announced

MOSCOW - United Russia, President Vladimir Putin's party, won 64.3 percent of the votes in the elections to the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, as final official results were announced on Saturday.

United Russia obtained 64.3 percent of the vote and won 315 parliamentary seats, the Communist Party 11.57 percent and 57 seats, the Liberal Democratic Party 8.14 percent and 40 seats, and Fair Russia 7.74 percent and 38 seats, Stanislav Vavilov, a deputy chairman of the Russian Central Elections Commission, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Support for United Russia was highest in the Chechen republic, standing at 99.36 percent of the vote and Ingushetia at 98.72 percent, Vavilov said.
The Communist Party enjoyed highest support in the Tambov region -- 19.17 percent and the Oryol region -- 17.58 percent; the Liberal Democratic Party in the Magadan region -- 15.41 percent and the Chita region --15.03 percent; and Fair Russia in the Astrakhan region -- 20.17 percent, and St. Petersburg, with 15.13 percent.
Russia held parliamentary elections on Dec. 2 when a total of 11 parties took part in the elections, with more than 4,000 candidates vying for the 450 seats. Eligible voters totaled 108 million and the turnout exceeded 60 percent.
