At least 11 dead in train-bus collisions in Bangladesh

DHAKA - At least 11 people were killed and over 40 injured in two separate incidents of train-bus collisions in Bangladesh on Saturday.

"Seven people were killed when a capital Dhaka-bound train rammed into a local passenger bus at a level crossing in Comilla, some 96 km east of Dhaka, at about 10:40 am on Saturday," the district's police chief, Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, told Xinhua over phone.

The exact number of injuries have not been made clear but local sources said over 22 people have been rushed to local hospital.

In another accident in Jessore, some 146 km from Dhaka, four people were killed and 18 others injured as a train rammed into a bus at a rail crossing at about 9 am," said the district's police chief Md. Ahsan at the accident site.

He said all the injured were admitted to hospital.

Both the officials, however, said that the reasons of the accidents have not been identified immediately.

Train accidents are almost common in Bangladesh because of poor signaling and rundown tracks.

Earlier in December last year at least 21 people were killed in a collision between two passenger trains in Bangladesh's Narsingdi district, 51 km northeast of capital Dhaka.
