(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-05-04 17:25

MUMBAI - At least 12 people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a passenger train derailed in western Indian state of Maharashtra on Sunday morning.

Police said the incident occurred in a tunnel near Nidi village, when the engine of the Diwa-Sawantwadi passenger train and four coaches jumped off the tracks at around 10 a.m. local time.

The injured were rushed to Roha area for medical treatment, the police said.

Emergency equipment have been rushed to the accident site and rescue operations are still going on, said the police.

Rescue workers are trying to extricate bodies from the derailed coaches.

Railway officials said relief and rescue trains were sent to the accident site from nearby regions of Thane and Mumbai.

According to a railway official in Mumbai, traffic has been paralyzed on Konkan railway network in Maharashtra.

Causes of the derailment have so far not been disclosed.

The incident came just days after a bomb blast in the Chennai railway station last week.

In another incident, eight coaches of a passenger train derailed near Ambedkar Nagar in northern state of Uttar Pradesh on April 28.
