Gansu-Hunan power line delivers 10 billion kWh in Q1

The Gansu-to-Hunan ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current transmission project has delivered more than 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity so far in 2026, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 2.95 million three-member households, according to State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company.

The project is a key part of the country's West-to-East power transmission strategy. More than 40 percent of the electricity transmitted this year comes from renewable sources.

The line runs 2,383 kilometers from the Qilian converter station in Gansu province to the Shaoshan converter station in Hunan province, crossing five provincial-level regions, including Shaanxi, Chongqing, and Hubei. Since it began operation in June 2017, it has transmitted more than 200 billion kWh of electricity.

The project has also facilitated the large-scale development and bundled transmission of wind, solar, and thermal power in Gansu, while optimizing cross-regional energy allocation and supporting China's carbon reduction goals.

Since the start of the year, the line has maintained high-load operations, with daily transmission exceeding 100 million kWh on 41 days.

According to State Grid Gansu Ultra-High Voltage Company, ensuring power supply security remains its top priority as the project's operator.

The company said it has strengthened safety management and adopted automated inspections, drone-based monitoring, and infrared and ultraviolet detection to build an all-weather, multi-dimensional monitoring system. These measures have improved equipment reliability and ensured the stable delivery of clean energy across regions.
